What do you want to be when you grow up?

Volume 7 / Issue 3 / Spring 2007

Florida recently passed legislation that requires all high school freshmen to declare a major. Each high school will decide which majors to offer from a list of 442 possibilities.  The aim is to help students focus on potential careers and acquire the skills needed to be successful once they enter the workforce.  It is hoped that this strategy will reduce high school dropout rates and increase test scores. Skeptics feel that freshman are not ready to make career decisions so early, while supporters think this new initiative will help students focus and further contemplate future goals. For a complete list of high school majors and associated courses visit the Florida Department of Education’s Approved Major's and Associated Courses Web page.
