Virtual Schools

Volume 4 / Issue 3 / Spring 2004

A growing number of students are looking for alternatives to traditional education. Many online or virtual schools have emerged to meet the demand, and business is booming. Nationwide, about 50,000 students took virtual courses in 2002. Such a learning environment can be ideal for students who do not fit in or find it difficult to cope in traditional schools. Since online learning is relatively new, there has been little research into its lasting effects. For example, do students who participate in it become introverts or computer zombies? Only time will tell, but in the meantime there are an abundance of opportunities for students at every level, from elementary school through postgraduate work.
